La Crescent - Hokah Public Schools - COVID 19 Update Learning Model Changes for Grades 5-12 May 6, 2021 Dear Parents and Students, This letter is to let you know that after taking a 14-day pause from in-person learning, we are planning to restart in-person learning next Tuesday, May 11th. While the spread of COVID-19 between our students has not stopped, it has slowed. It will be important for all students, families, and staff to follow safety protocols to minimize the spread and to allow us to stay open until the end of this school year. Our COVID-19 response team will continue to be in consultation with the MN Department of Health and Houston County Public Health to monitor COVID-19 spread and our ability to stay open. Elementary students will continue their current learning model of in-person learning, which is subject to change at any time. If a student is in the middle of quarantine, they must fulfill the quarantine before coming back to school. Please work with our school nurse if you have questions on quarantine expectations. Middle and high school students (5-12) will return to in-person learning starting Tuesday, May 11th. Wednesdays will be a distance learning for all students, grades 5 - 12. The Seniors’ last day of school is Friday, May 21st. All activities may resume practice on Monday, May 10th, after school. Competitions may resume on May 11th. It is important for families to know that if your child feels any symptoms of being unwell, please keep your child home and consider having a COVID test. La Crescent - Hokah Public Schools - COVID 19 Update Learning Model Changes for Grades 5-12 April 26, 2021 Dear Parents and Students, This letter is to inform you that the spread of COVID-19 is continuing through the high school and now the middle school. As a result, all 5th-12th graders will go to distance learning effective tomorrow, Tuesday, April 27, through at least Monday, May 10. All activities K - 12 are also closed during this time period. Dear Parents and Students, This letter is to inform you of our current COVID-19 status in the school district. As of 9 AM this morning, we have 17 positive COVID-19 cases. All are in grades 9-12, and these cases have been identified in the last four days. We had six confirmed cases this morning, and none of those students were part of the group of students who were quarantined earlier this week due to exposure. At this time, we have no positive cases in the elementary and middle schools. We have been working closely with the Minnesota Department of Health and the School Board regarding what is happening in our area with COVID. We are the hot spot of the County right now and asked for their recommendation as to what to do next for the safety of our students. Their recommendation is to move to distance learning immediately for 14 days in high school. The expectation is that we will stop the spread and be able to bring back students for the last couple of weeks of school. If you have received quarantine instruction from Mrs. Dodson this week, please continue those instructions until May 6th. Elementary and middle school students will continue their current learning model, which is subject to change at any time. High school students (9-12) will change to distance learning starting tomorrow, Friday, April 23, and continue through May 6. Students will come back starting Friday, May 7; likely, we will have students come back in a hybrid model on that day. More information regarding that will come out during the pause. Advanced Placement tests will be rescheduled for those students after the distance learning period. High School MCA Science tests will be rescheduled after the distance learning period. Prom will be rescheduled for May 22nd at the Event Center, and more information will follow. All graduation plans remain in place as is for the May 30th ceremony at this time. All outdoor activities for grades 9-12 will be allowed to continue at this time for students not on quarantine; There will be no open gyms. Teams will be expected to follow safe social distancing guidelines, including wearing masks and not sharing equipment. 7th and 8th-grade activities will still take place as much as possible. Coaches will be communicating with their athletes directly about practices. Nutrition Department Update: The Nutrition Department will offer meals to all distance learners, including 9-12 grade students during the distance learning period. Students/families will have the option to order meals for daily pick up OR a 5-Day meal pack that can be picked up on Friday afternoon. The first 5-day meal pack pick-up will be April 30th. La Crescent-Hokah School Board Selects Eric Martinez as next Superintendent The La Crescent-Hokah School Board is proud to announce that Mr. Eric Martinez has been selected as the district’s next superintendent effective July 1, 2021. Current Superintendent Kevin Cardille will be retiring on June 30, 2021. “We were pleased to work with the Minnesota School Board Association’s Superintendent Search Program, utilizing their expertise in recruitment that ultimately attracted 15 qualified candidates. Using input from staff, administration, and community members to guide our decision making, the Board interviewed five candidates and then narrowed the field to two candidates. Mr. Eric Martinez emerged as the best fit for our district,” said Board Chair Eric Morken. Chair Morken added, “There were several quotes from Mr. Martinez’s interviews that stood out to me. They included, ‘People don’t perform well if they do not feel safe,’ ‘We need the best version of you,’ and ‘How can we work together to get staff and students where we need and want them to be?’” Mr. Martinez has served as a high school social studies teacher, an assistant high school principal, and has most recently served as the 4th-12th grade principal for Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Community Schools from 2012 until present. Mr. Martinez notes, “I am incredibly excited for this opportunity to grow with the La Crescent-Hokah Lancers. Creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication are very important to me, and I am excited to learn about all of the opportunities for growth in the La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools. I look forward to serving in such a great community.” The La Crescent-Hokah Board of Education approved the contract for Mr. Martinez at the April 6, 2021 special meeting.

Two finalists selected for La Crescent-Hokah superintendent position La Crescent, MN— The La Crescent-Hokah School Board has selected two finalists to return for a second interview for the school district’s superintendent position. The finalists are: ■ Eric Martinez, Principal, Waubun-Omega-White Earth School District, Waubun, MN ■ Mary Morem, Principal, Triton Public Schools, Dodge Center, MN The finalists were selected from a pool of fifteen applicants based on criteria established by the school board. On Monday, March 15, the top 9 students from the La Crescent-Hokah High School Math Team competed in the 37th annual State Math League Tournament. The day's events were all held virtually and included the Math Bowl (a fast paced competition of the top 10 math league students in the state of MN), individual events, and a team event. At the end of the competition, La Crescent students placed 6th out of the 11 teams in Class A! Congratulations on an incredible finish Mathletes!!
The School Nutrition Department is continuing to offer the option to order school meals for virtual learning days only. Beginning Monday, March 15th, 5th-12th grade students will all be transitioned to in-person learning on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesdays will continue to be a distance learning day from 8AM - Noon. Meals will be available at school for students on in-person learning days. You will have the option to order a 1-day meal pack for Wednesday. These meal packs will be given out on Tuesday at the end of the day (handout is from 2:50PM - 3:15PM at the Fine Arts Entrance). Meals may also be ordered for a daily pick-up from 1:00PM-2:00PM at the HS Dock for any student who has opted to remain distance learning for the duration of the school year. Last Monday, the Math Team took 1st place in the final meet of the season, which resulted in a tie with PEM for 1st in our section. Our top 8 team members will be competing in the Math League State Competition on March 15! Our entire season was held virtually, and the state meet will be held virtually as well.
The School Board of La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools is searching for a new superintendent. The school board contracted with the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) to provide guidance and assist us with the search. The school board met on February 2, 2021, to plan the search. Community and staff input regarding the superintendent search is now being requested, and a public survey is available for staff and community members to fill out beginning February 5, 2021, to February 23, 2021. All responses to the survey are anonymous, and MSBA will summarize and provide an overview of comments for presentation to the Board. Pandemic-EBT Benefits for Families Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may be eligible for Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) to purchase food for days they are not in the school building. To be considered, households must submit an application for free or reduced-price meals for the 2020-21 school year or be approved for Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Families who received P-EBT benefits last summer are not automatically eligible; eligibility is based on the current school year. Benefits may be retroactive to September 2020, depending on when eligibility for free or reduced-price meals is determined. To ensure you qualify for the most benefits, please submit your application as soon as possible. What is P-EBT? Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a temporary food benefit available to Minnesota families with children who would have received free or reduced-price meals if schools were open. Families with eligible children received a lump sum payment of $325 per child on a new or existing EBT card to help fill the gap created by a loss of school meals. Families with eligible children also received a lump sum payment of $100 dollars per child to help feed their children during the summer when many summer meal programs were closed
We are happy to announce that Winter Sports for the 9th, JV, and Varsity levels will be starting practice on Monday, January 4th.. The 7th and 8th grade Winter Sports teams will be starting practice on Monday, January 18. More information regarding schedules, fan attendance, and event restrictions will be sent out via email in the near future. Sign up / Registration will be open tomorrow, December 18th through January 15th and will be done through INFINITE CAMPUS as it was in the Fall. The registration fees have been reduced by 50% to account for the shorter season. Information regarding sign up can be found in your Infinite Campus email. The office (in the Media Center) will be open on Mon & Tues (Dec. 21st & 22nd) and will be closed until Mon January 4th to DROP OFF YOUR FORMS. ISD 300 Families: 11/20/20 As we continue to navigate our way through the challenges that this year brings, we wanted to update you on some timelines for planning purposes. All K-12 students will be in a full distance learning model until Monday, January 18th, 2021. Our hope is that all students will be able to return on that date to the hybrid model of learning at the secondary level and in-person learning at the elementary level. As we monitor all of the factors impacting our area weekly, it is apparent that the number of COVID cases is rising and are forecasted to continue to rise over the next several weeks. We will continue to monitor our local data, work with our public health officials to adjust as needed, and continue to be flexible in our response. Please continue to contact your building attendance offices with updates on illness, testing results, and quarantines to help our nursing staff determine our students’ and staff’s overall health. All lunch and meal information is updated on our district website and included in the weekly survey for your convenience. Continue to communicate with your students’ teachers with any questions you have related to learning during this time. Activities - We will not have any in-person activities until January 18th. Players/coaches are allowed to interact virtually. We are holding off on Winter Sports sign up until after the 1st of the year, and we know exactly when we'll resume practices. If things make a drastic positive swing, we'll revisit this topic and communicate via email / infinite campus. Families – You can help generate state aid for your school, benefiting students and teachers, by completing the Application for Educational Benefits and returning it to your school. La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools provides nutritious meals to children without charge to you. We receive assistance from the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) based on Household Income Statements completed by households. How do I complete an application? You can complete an application via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or request a paper application from either school building or the District Office. How does this generate state aid for my school? Students in households that meet the free or reduced-price meal income guidelines will generate compensatory revenue for their school. Schools must use compensatory revenue to meet students' needs who are behind their peers, such as remedial instruction, instructional materials including digital learning and technology, bilingual programs, and additional teachers and teacher aides. These applications may also make teachers in your school eligible for the federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program if they have outstanding college loans. However, the household must complete and return the forms, or complete the online form, no later than December 15 so the school can calculate eligibility and report to MDE. This will not impact your students’ eligibility to receive free meals during the 2020-21 school year. What else do the meal benefits cover? Qualifying for meal benefits will allow other discounts for your student in areas such as athletic fees, ACT fees, course fees, select Community Education classes, and more!

October 7, 2020 Notice: Change in learning model for students in Grades 5 - 12 beginning tomorrow, Thursday, October 8 through Friday, October 23. Parents and Students, Please note that this change in learning plan impacts only the 5 - 12 students at this time. Today our Secondary Administrators and District Nurse did contact tracing of a Covid positive individual in the secondary building. The trace led to the close contact of many staff in the secondary building. At the time of this letter, 10 staff members have been exposed. We have already had difficulty finding substitutes for our staff who need to be out, so this event will leave us no choice but to change our learning model to distance learning for students in grades 5 - 12. This change is at the secondary school only. At this time, we have not found a connection to the Elementary building or bus routes. The Elementary school will continue to operate as they have been, face-to-face, and busses will operate on a regular daily basis. It is imperative that we make this change starting tomorrow, October 8. All students in grades 5 - 12 will be changing to distance learning. While we are in a distance learning model, all students should be following their daily class schedule Monday through Friday. During the distance learning time, all co-curricular activities and after school activities are canceled. The school building is and will be closed to all unauthorized visitors. If any student needs any materials from the school building to do their work, they should contact the Middle / High School office to arrange a pickup or assistance to get what they need at 507-895-4484. This change in the learning plan is primarily due to the inability to obtain a large number of substitutes to carry on our current teaching model. The exposed staff will potentially need to quarantine for up to 14 days; they will be teaching online during this time, provided they are healthy enough to do so. It may be good for all students to consider this a quarantine so that we will be clear to start back again in our hybrid model on October 26. As a reminder, next week, we have only three days on our calendar, and those three days were scheduled as online learning days for all students K - 12. Since the inability to attain enough secondary teacher substitutes is causing the change in the learning plan, our preschool program in the secondary building will continue to operate as-is and until further notice. I want to remind everyone again that our ability to remain open is highly dependent on the positive Covid cases in the county and the spread of Covid in our community. Please do your part to control the spread and allow us to keep our school open. Please wear a mask, avoid crowded events, and always social distance from others. During this time, please notify our school nurse, Lauren Dodson, at the number above if your child develops Covid symptoms or tests positive for Covid. La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools Back to school update First, I want to thank all of you for your patience as we work through our directives and options. As you know, Governor Walz released the final direction for Minnesota Public Schools on Thursday. Since that time, we have been breaking down the expectations and cleaning up our final plans. As promised in an email on July 22, I will send out our plan within a week of the Governor’s decision. I am hoping to get that out by Friday of this week. We are working with our transportation company and private schools to determine how we can coordinate to provide the best education for all students. On Friday, you will get several messages from the District. One will be a survey that we will need you to complete for each child in your household. The survey will ask you for a definite answer about your student transportation needs and if your child(ren) will return to school this fall or if you will keep them home for distance learning. Right now, our plan includes having students in PK-4 come to school every day and learn face to face with teachers. In grades 5-12, we will use a hybrid plan likely with students in two groups. “A” group will come Monday and Tuesday to learn face to face in the classroom and will be distance learning with the classroom teacher on Wednesday through Friday. “B” group will distance learn Monday through Wednesday and be face to face with classroom teachers Thursday and Friday. Please watch for more specific details about these plans on Friday afternoon. The number of positive Covid-19 results in the school district counties determines our ability to have students in the school. This plan will be fluid and can change as we are provided with new data and positive counts for the counties. If we all exercise good practices to minimize the spread of Covid-19, we hope to have all students back in school soon. Dear parents, La Crescent School district requires students in grades 5-12 to utilize a device (Chromebook) for instruction. All students entering 5th or 9th grade and any student new to the district in grades 5-12 for the 2020-21 school year has two options for his/her student device. Students may choose the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) option or purchase one of the four recommended devices from Best Buy online store August 3-October 31, 2020. If you choose the BYOD option, the student’s device should have a minimum of 10-inch screen size, wireless access, and be capable of running the Internet. Please note iPhones/Android phones/Ipad Mini/7 inch Nexus tablet does not meet this requirement. iPad is not recommended either, due to some issues with Google apps integration and state testing needs. The Best Buy option is only available to students entering 5th or 9th grade and any student new to the district in grades 5-12 for the 2020-21 school year. A detailed procedure, along with a unique code per eligible student for ordering your student Chromebook, will be emailed on August 3rd. If your student qualifies for free or reduced lunch, the district will order the Chromebook for you, and it will be available for pick up from the Secondary School office during the first week of school(if the school is onsite at that time). Mental Health Support from the State of Minnesota: The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a tremendous amount of stress, fear and anxiety for many people. It’s important that Minnesotans have access to the mental health care resources they need to stay well during this challenging time. State agencies are working together to ensure these services are available, and they are also connecting people with private organizations that can provide support. This includes telemedicine resources (which replace clinic visits) and other well-being supports to help families and individuals cope. The Minnesota Department of Human Services is now offering additional funds for the families of children ages 5 to 18 who qualify for free and reduced-price meals. This new program, called Pandemic EBT (P-EBT), will provide $325 per child that families can use to purchase nutritious food for their household. Families with children who received free or reduced-price meals at school, and who were between the ages of 5 and 18 on September 1, 2019, may qualify. Benefits are available to two groups: • Families receiving Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on March 18, 2020. Benefits for these families were issued automatically and appeared on their EBT balance on May 30, 2020. These families do not need to take any further action. • Families receiving free or reduced-price school meals, but not SNAP or MFIP benefits. These families need to fill out a short application for a P-EBT card. Families can apply between June 8, 2020, and June 30, 2020. If approved, families will receive a P-EBT card in the mail, which will arrive with the funds preloaded. Families in need of assistance accessing or using their P-EBT benefits are urged to contact the P-EBT Hotline at 651-431-4050 or 800-657-3698. If your family or someone you know needs additional ongoing assistance accessing healthy foods, please contact your local tribal or county human services office, visit ApplyMN, or call the Minnesota Food HelpLine at 888-711-1151.

Class of 2020 Students and Families: We have been holding out hope for the opportunity to gather as a class on July 25th. Unfortunately, in the last 4 weeks there has been very little change to the guidelines we need to follow to ensure a safe, healthy environment. We do not anticipate in the next 4 weeks anything else will change relative to the number of people that can safely gather. As a result of this, we are going to cancel any type of formal gathering on the 25th of July. We hope this allows each of you to move forward with any other planning that you may need to do.
