Dear Parents and Guardians,

We’ve wrapped up another year at La Crescent-Hokah Elementary and we sincerely hope your student had a great year. These unprecedented times have provided us new challenges in providing our students an education, but we’ve spent time reflecting on feedback from families, and have used this Distance Learning time as an opportunity to improve our instruction as well. We are poised for the next challenges and opportunities that 2020-21 will bring!

Construction and renovation of our building are already underway, and many classrooms will be in different areas of our facility for next year. Our goal remains: Maintaining consistency of programming through this transition, while keeping students, and parents informed of future plans and classroom placements. We are reducing fourth grade to three sections, and this will allow for all grades K-4 to stay in our current location.

In this mailing, you will find a number of important pieces of information. You will find your students, a grade level supply list, a “Back to School Night” flyer, a PTO spring newsletter, and more. Our Teacher Leadership Team determined that end of year zoom conferences would take place in lieu of traditional report cards and grades. The purpose will be discussing student achievement and areas of growth. Please take a few minutes to review the enclosed documents and let us know if you have any questions. Note the school calendar for 2020-21 has some additional weeks off, and September 14 is the first day of school for all students including Kindergarten. This revised calendar is due to the construction project and will allow us to continue learning.

Classroom Placements for 2020-21: We will be mailing out your student’s classroom placement in mid or late-August. This helps us streamline our communication and ensure we balance our classrooms with summer enrollments and moves. Teachers have been working this spring to equitably distribute students across each grade level to account for gender, academic, social, behavioral, and emotional needs. Our goal is to develop balanced classes to best meet the needs of all students. In order to maintain balanced classes, we are not able to honor a specific teacher or friend requests. We are confident that positive relationships will develop amongst students and teachers in each of our classrooms.

Online registration: We will continue using online registration again this year for all students in grades K-4. All families will be required to complete online registration prior to the start of the school year. This will help to minimize the paperwork families need to complete each year and streamline our registration process.

Summer Opportunities: We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer! It’s a great time to connect with family and friends. Please consider setting aside time for reading in June, July, and August. Reading for fun helps students prevent the summer academic slide. Even 15-30 minutes of reading per day goes a long way!

Take care & stay connected with family and friends! The 2020-21 school year will be here before we know it.
