Welcome to the La Crescent-Hokah School District
Hello from Superintendent Kevin Cardille
I am honored to be selected as the next Superintendent of the La Crescent – Hokah School District. I am finding the district a very interesting place and sure do find the Mississippi River a great place for fun and recreation. What a beautiful community and great school district! I have had the last nine days to meet the district office staff and administration as well as technology staff and various teachers. I find that their commitment is twelve months of the year. I am quite impressed with what the school has to offer and would like to just mention a few things that stood out to me, some things that should make both communities proud of their school system.
First, as I did my research on the district I found that the school is very strong academically. High ACT and MCA scores, a great World’s Best Work Force plan and commitment to improving curriculum delivery and student success. I have found a staff and administration that uses data as information to improve student learning. I have found that various groups have written plans that have been developed by teams and contain a common thread of communication and collaboration. There is a desire to improve communication and access to information about the school. I appears that the plan is for residents to not only be able to read about the programs in the district, but also feel the strength of Lancer pride. Lancer Learning HD and the commitment to making the whole district a 1:1 student to computer ratio is admirable. I am impressed that the district embraces the use of technology and the benefits that it can provide to students not only as a tool for learning, but the ability to learn 21st. Century technical skills that will make them more employable and effective in the workforce. I have found that there is an interest in helping students to learn to be great self-advocates and learn to be good communicators and leaders. I have found a science department that is working together to create their own online text book and an industrial technology department that has students building motorcycles and vehicles of which the students can be proud. What a great accomplishment to provide college bound academics and vocational skill sets to prepare students for their choice of careers.
There is a respect for family and relationships which makes me very happy. A focus on personal wellness for the staff, students and the community is evident in the commitment to early childhood programs, summer recreation programs, and promoting the use of the swimming pool, gymnasiums, and ball fields all over town. I get the feeling that student and community programs encourage everyone to find balance in their daily lives and a belief for everyone to celebrate the good things we have in our world. There is an emphasis to teach the whole child starting at early childhood to college and career preparation. This is a beautiful commitment.
Speaking of beautiful, the environment around La Crescent is spectacular. As I drive around town I see very beautiful views of the Mighty Mississippi River, full of fun and recreation. Just a few miles down the road toward Hokah you find wonderful wetlands and magnificent bluffs. It almost scares me to drive there because I find myself looking for wildlife and taking in the sights as I drive. I am excited to work with the staff, students and families of La Crescent –Hokah Public Schools. I want to commend the district on their focus on student learning and the family
