La Crescent Secondary School Board Report
To: La Crescent –Hokah School Board and Superintendent Cardille
From: Steve Smith – Principal (5-12)
Date: August 2016
The building is being put back together and readied for the opening days of school. Once again Mr. Lambert and his department have done a fantastic job of getting the inside and outside of our school ready for the year. The work on the roof was completed in early August and tested shortly thereafter with a heavy summer rain. We hired several students this summer to work on our custodial staff. This went very well and it was very helpful for our efficiency and work completion. We will look at offering this opportunity again.
Hiring is currently complete and teaching staff is in place. We did hire Ryan Vinzant in our PE/Health department and Brittany Schilla in our social Studies department to fill vacancies created by Rick Yanke and Shelley Gates leaving to take new positions outside of our district.
Schedules are being processed and conflicts resolved in our student services department to prepare for the opening of school. Abby Kemp and Tammy Thesing have been putting in many hours to resolve those.
Fall activities are under way and Jeff Copp held our fall coaches meeting last week as well as the fall sports meeting for parents.
Back to school orientation for freshman is going to take place in the inservice week. The work here is being lead by our Link Leader program and a huge thanks to the staff working on that, Abby Kemp and Jenny Von Arx and our student leaders.
Wednesday August 31st is going to be our back to school night for parents and students. That information is being mailed out this week.
Our leadership team met to determine our site goal last week. We determined that we wanted to use the ACT to measure college readiness and increase the number of students who reach benchmark in all 4 subjects.
Credit recovery was held in our building in June. We used the Odysseyware program that we accessed through HVED. It went very well and we are looking to help refine those courses for next year. Danita Hazel served as our lead teacher on this.
Several of our teachers have been quite busy with summer school and served a good number of students supporting needs in math and reading.
The PBIS committee has been putting in additional time this summer to prepare activities for the first days of school. We will once again rely on the advisors for most of the first 1-2 days of school to ensure all are on the same page.
Some of the professional development topics staff were working on this summer included new assessment tools from HVED that we hope to use this year to help measure where are students stand in math and reading.
- Administration and Student Services staff attended a workshop on 504 policies to better support and understand our students and families needs in that area.
