Dear Parents:

As you are likely aware, human cases of swine influenza A (HWI) virus infection have been identified
in the United States including a case in the state of Minnesota.  At this time we recommend that you
review basic infection prevention measures with your child.  These include:

1.       Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing,

2.       Washing your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol based hand rub,

3.       Drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest,

4.       Stay home with plenty of bed rest if you are sick for at least a 24 hour period, and

5.       Limit contact with people who have flu like symptoms.

La Crescent-Hokah school district has developed a plan in cooperation with Houston County for flu issues.  The County is connected with the State Department of Health and they coordinate with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta.  Having preplanning in place will allow us to move quickly if the need arises.

Symptoms of Swine Flu are very similar to the general flu including but not limited to headache fever,
body aches, sore throat, diarrhea or vomiting.  The severity can range from very mild to severe.  If you
are worried about your symptoms your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed.  Please note that this flu may cause worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions including but not limited to asthma, allergies, weakened immune system or diabetes.

Again, continue to practice good health hygiene and be assured that the District Nurses are monitoring for all health issues and will keep you informed.

Sincerely,

David M. Krenz
